About NEERI

The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), established in 1958. Headquartered in Nagpur, Maharashtra, we operate five zonal laboratories across India.

Our mission is to provide innovative and effective environmental solutions through research, development, and knowledge dissemination. With over 600 scientists, engineers, and staff, we address critical environmental challenges in water, air, land, and sustainable development.

NEERI has been instrumental in shaping India's environmental policies, setting standards, and developing affordable technologies for pollution control and resource management. Our work aligns with national priorities and global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Core Research Areas

Water & Wastewater Management

Development of advanced treatment technologies, water quality assessment, river rejuvenation, desalination, and decentralized wastewater systems. Our team works on arsenic and fluoride removal, membrane technologies, and real-time water quality monitoring systems.

Air Pollution Control

Source apportionment studies, emission inventory, development of low-cost sensors, air quality forecasting, and control technologies for industrial and vehicular pollution. We operate a national network of air quality monitoring stations.

Waste Management & Circular Economy

Technologies for municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, plastic waste, e-waste, and biomass utilization. Research on waste-to-energy, composting, landfill remediation, and lifecycle assessment for sustainable material flows.

Environmental Biotechnology

Application of microbial processes for pollution remediation, enzyme technology, bioremediation of contaminated sites, and development of bio-indicators for ecosystem health assessment.

Climate Change & Sustainability

Carbon footprint assessment, climate vulnerability analysis, GHG mitigation strategies, environmental impact assessment, and development of sustainability indicators for industries and cities.

Environmental Impact Assessment

Comprehensive EIA studies for industrial projects, infrastructure development, and urban plans. Our team provides regulatory compliance support and sustainable alternatives.

Analytical Testing

NABL-accredited laboratory for water, air, soil, noise, and biota analysis. We offer testing for over 500 parameters using advanced instrumentation like GC-MS, ICP-MS, and HPLC.

Technology Development

Customized technology solutions for effluent treatment, air pollution control, waste management, and resource recovery. From lab-scale to pilot plants and full-scale implementation.

Notable Projects

Ganga River Rejuvenation

Comprehensive river basin management plan, real-time water quality monitoring network, and development of cost-effective technologies for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment for the National Mission for Clean Ganga.

National Air Quality Monitoring Network

Establishment of 50 continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations across 20 cities, development of air quality forecasting system, and source apportionment studies for informed policy decisions.
